Amer Michel, C’est Mon Apéritif, created by the Belgian artist Litho Laline in 1920, centres on a bonneted woman raising a small glass with evident satisfaction. Her dark profile stands out crisply against a brilliant green field, while a black cat in a red bow tie sits at her side. Above them, the brand name “Amer Michel” curves across the poster in emphatic red lettering; below, the flowing blue declaration “C’est Mon Apéritif” gives the advertisement the character of a personal endorsement.

Made in the years immediately following the First World War, the poster belongs to an era in which lithographic advertising had become an integral part of European urban visual culture. Commercial artists needed to communicate at a glance across busy streets, cafés and shopfronts, and Laline’s design does so through concentrated colour, an instantly legible silhouette and a memorable comic personality. The woman-and-cat pairing also recalls the familiar French song of La Mère Michel, whose central character loses her cat: a popular cultural association that lends the beverage promotion an additional note of recognition and humour.

A closer look

The figure is placed slightly off-centre rather than held within a formal symmetry. Seen in profile, she turns towards the raised glass, directing the eye from her face to the drink. White hair and the pale folds of her bonnet create a bright interval between the black clothing and green background, while compact shadows beneath her chin and hand provide just enough modelling to keep the figure from becoming a wholly flat silhouette. Tiny highlights on the glass suggest both its transparency and the warm colour of its contents.

At the lower left, the cat forms a visual counterweight to the woman’s head and hand. Its body is reduced to a dense black shape, enlivened by alert features and a conspicuous red bow tie. This small accessory links the animal to the scarlet brand lettering overhead, creating a controlled rhythm of red accents across the composition. The cat’s upright pose also introduces a second, more mischievous personality: it appears almost as attentive to the ritual of the apéritif as its owner.

The typography is carefully divided by function. “Amer Michel” is broad, forceful and immediately readable, its arched placement commanding the upper portion of the design. By contrast, “C’est Mon Apéritif” is written in blue cursive across the lower area. The change from block lettering to handwriting turns a commercial slogan into something resembling a spoken remark or signature. Cream edging contains the saturated green, red, blue and black within a narrow frame, while the tight arrangement leaves little inactive space.

Context and significance

“Amer” denotes the bitter style of aperitif promoted here, but Laline does not rely on a bottle or elaborate serving scene to explain the product. Instead, the advertisement is built around character, gesture and verbal assertion. The raised glass makes the act of drinking immediately intelligible, while the slogan supplies a concise testimonial: this is not merely an apéritif, but the character’s chosen one.

Such economy is central to the poster’s lasting graphic appeal. A handful of strong colours, two contrasting styles of lettering and a playful encounter between woman, glass and cat produce an unusually complete miniature narrative. The result remains closely tied to the convivial café culture of its period, yet its sharp silhouette and witty visual hierarchy give it a directness that still reads instantly.
